Canterbury Choral Society Youth Choir
About the choir
The 2007 Family Carols concert at Canterbury Cathedral was the first public performance of the Youth Choir, formed in the summer under Richard Cooke's leadership. The choir, made up of about twenty-five boys and girls aged 7 to 14, started rehearsing in September, after auditions were held in July. More new members joined after further auditions were held in January.
The children meet every Tuesday in central Canterbury for an hour and a half and start every rehearsal with exercises which train them in vocal technique. Richard has already introduced them to a varied repertoire of sacred and secular music from the 12th to 21st centuries, including folk songs, rounds, part-songs based on poetry as well asthe carols performed at the concert on Wednesday 19th December. The Youth Choir also joined Canterbury Choral Society on Saturday 19th January in their performance of Insanae et Vanae Curae by Haydn, as part of CCS's concert with the London Handel Orchestra, in Canterbury Cathedral.
